Sexual Harassment, Moral Harassment, and How to prevent it


Recently, recognition of the word “harassment” has increased. Tackling harassment is an important issue for companies. Despite the fact that the number of harassment cases are increasing, many companies have not taken effective measures.

First of all, what does harassment mean?
There are roughly 6 types of harassment.

1. Sexual Harassment

This type of harassment is widely acknowledged. Sexual harassment, so-called “sexuhara” refers to sexual behavior that is repeated against the other’s will.
Sexual harassment can be divided into two types. The second type “Hostile environment harassment”, is a distracting, unwanted sexual behavior that affects the workers job performance. An example of this type of harassment will be to touch the chest and waist of employees, and causing them to lose motivation to work.

2. Power Harassment

Often referred to as pawahara, this type of harassment is when a boss hurts the dignity of his or her team members by being persistent and misusing hierarchical relationship. In many cases, the victim is unconscious of the problem. By the time the victim realizes it is harassment, the employee may be traumatized and be suffering from depression.

3. Moral Harassment

Moral harassment, or morahara, is the act of damaging one’s dignity verbally, by a certain attitude, or by print. It is a so-called “bullying” act that often escalates.

4. Alcohol Harassment

This indicates any harassment involving alcohol. This also includes forcing one to drink and other nuisance behavior.

5. Gender Harassment

Gender harassment is when one is evaluated or categorized unfairly based on their gender instead of their ability. It also refers to appointing certain tasks due to the traditional gender roles. Making women serve tea and clean, and making men work overtime or do physical labor are examples of this gender harassment.

6. Academic Harassment

This is when the 5 types of harassment explained earlier in this article takes place in school. Professors and teachers use their position and power to lower students’ motivation to learn. Displaying inappropriate behavior and punishment to students are also examples of academic harassment. This type of harassment is characterized to have a high risk of leaving a negative influence on the students’ life.

Improving the current situation of harassment is an important issue in personnel management. There is a risk that harassment will cause huge losses to the company, so it is necessary to take measures to deal with it. So why is harassment still happening, and why are effective countermeasures not taken?

The problem is that the employees of the company do not understand what exactly “harassment” is in the first place. There is also a large gap between how an act is perceived by perpetrators and victims. It is critical to understand how harassment perceived by the other. Management ability in the organization is required.

In order to solve these problems, first, it is important to make sure that managers do not allow harassment with a resolute attitude.
